Visiting San Francisco for the first time? Maximize your trip by exploring all the city has to offer. While Union Square often tops must-see lists, it's truly worth only half a day or less. Discover what Union Square truly offers and decide if it's worth a quick stop during your city adventure.
Exploring Union Square- How to get to Union Square
Public Transportation
MUNI
MUNI is the city's public transportation system. If you are already staying in the city, the following routes stop at or near Union Square:
BART
BART is the public transportation system that serves the SF plus the Bay Area. If you're staying outside of the city or near a BART station, stop at the Powell Station to get to Union Square. You will need to walk a couple blocks from Powell Station or take a MUNI from Powell Station.
Parking
The parking garage underneath Union Square is called SFMTA Union Square Garage. Currently the going rate is $6/hour.
Do It For the 'Gram
Looking to get the best instagrammable spots at Union Square? Here are my top choices:

There are about 4-5 heart sculptures at Union Square that you can take your best gram shot. Extra points if you are able to get one with a cable car in the background.

Maiden Lane is not technically in Union Square but if you're open to exploring Union Square's close peripherals, this is a great alleyway to do so. Maiden Lane is a pedestrian-only street in San Francisco known for its upscale boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. It's also home to a landmarked space designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The best time to take photos in Maiden Lane is at night when their string lights come on. The vibes are so cozy.
This wikimedia commons photo does not do the lobby any justice but you have to trust me! The lobby features its original 1904 carved wood-beamed ceiling, oak Corinthian columns, and the historic Magneta grandfather clock.

Good Eats
Just need a quick bite? Coffee craving or table with a view? I got you covered.
Best Quick Bite & Coffee: The Freshmarket
This cafe is located inside Neiman Marcus and serves your typical small cafe fare such as soups, salads, and sandwiches.
Best Table with a View: The Cheesecake Factory
The Cheesecake Factory is located on the rooftop of Macy's. Take the elevator all the way up and opt for a table out on their balcony. From their balcony, you get the most gorgeous aerial view of Union Square.

Overall Experience
Definitely take a detour in Union Square if you're looking to buy the trendiest high fashion outfit and accessories. If you're not specifically looking for a brand-specific high-end item, skipping Union Square would be best.
